Choosing laptops for a 60-person dev team

We’re standardizing this quarter and I’m torn between 14-inch MacBook Pro (M3 Pro, 32GB/1TB) and Dell Latitude 7440 (i7, 32GB/1TB) for backend and data folks; I need [redacted] on a PO by Oct 15. If you’ve run both at scale, how did Docker performance, battery under Zoom+IDE, and warranty turnaround compare, and what was your all-in cost with docks and 3-year support?

We just standardized on 14" M3 Pros; with Orbstack (https://orbstack.dev) Docker was consistently faster than our Latitude 7440s, and Zoom+IDE battery was about 8–9h vs about 5–6h — call it a laptop that doesn’t panic at a long standup. Dell’s ProSupport Plus NBD beat AppleCare’s typical 2–3‑day depot unless you’ve got Enterprise, and all‑in with TB4 docks and 3‑yr support the Macs ran roughly $500–$700 more per seat; if your images aren’t “multi‑arch,” pilot 5 of each and time a cold/warm build before you lock the PO.

‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‌

On our 58-dev rollout, the only real gotcha was dock power: with Latitude 7440 + WD19S (90W) we saw slow battery drain during Zoom + IntelliJ + Docker builds; switching to WD19TBS/180W fixed it, and for the 14" M3 Pro we used CalDigit TS4 (98W) to avoid the same. All-in landed around ~$2.55k per Dell with ProSupport + dock and ~$3.05k per Mac with AppleCare + TS4; if you’re locking POs by “Oct 15”, want my line-item template to speed vendor quotes?

Given your Oct 15 PO, I’d lean 14" M3 Pro if your Docker stack is arm64‑friendly; our only snag was a couple of “x86‑only” base images that forced a rebuild plan. All‑in, Macs ran about $250–$350 more than 7440s with 3‑yr support, but AppleCare+ swaps were same‑day versus ProSupport NBD that sometimes slipped to 2–3 days. Quick check before you lock it: time a “docker compose build” on one backend and one data service on each; if those images aren’t multi‑arch, you may prefer the Dells.

‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌

And backing @matclar’s power note: on our 7440s we only stopped the Zoom+IDE trickle‑drain after moving to a WD22TB4 (180W) and setting BIOS ‘Thermal Management’ to ‘Ultra Performance’ when docked; Docker builds steadied, with a bit more fan noise. If you go that route, bake the dock swap into your cost — otherwise the Mac route plus AppleCare for Enterprise tends to win on turnaround.
